Left abandoned on the side of the road, with a heart-wrenching gaze... The cat: 'Why did my owner abandon me?"
Can a cat with a home become a stray? Of course, because we can’t guarantee that every owner will take full responsibility for their pet cat. There are countless reasons for abandoning a cat, but in the end, it's the kitten that suffers. The poor little one doesn’t understand what happened, and suddenly its owner doesn’t like it anymore, and just like that, it becomes a stray.
The owner who abandoned the cat never thought about the tragic situation the cat would face after becoming a stray, how it would survive, and how long it could live?
Stray Golden British Shorthair
The first time the young lady saw this cat in the neighborhood, she thought it might have gotten lost from its owner. She didn’t believe anyone would abandon such an expensive British Shorthair! But then the nearby security guard told her that the cat was sick, and it was said to have contracted feline distemper.
This explains things. If this little one were a healthy British Shorthair, it wouldn’t be hard to find a home. But the cat is sick, and shouldn’t the owner have considered this before getting a pet? Abandoning a purebred cat with no survival skills is basically condemning it to death!
The cat was very affectionate. The young lady just called out a few times, and the little one trotted over to her, looking utterly confused. It seemed like it didn’t understand that it had been abandoned.
It was already late at night when the kitten was found. The young lady also had cats at home and didn’t want to bring the sick cat back, but luckily, one of her friends, after hearing about the cat’s situation, took an airline crate and rescued the little one overnight.
They took the little one to the nearest veterinary hospital, and to their surprise, the veterinarian immediately recognized the cat. It turned out that not long ago, someone had brought this cat in for treatment.
The person who brought it in ran a cattery, and after the cat was diagnosed with feline distemper, the owner immediately decided not to treat it. They even tried to guilt-trip the medical staff, saying that if the hospital wouldn't take it, they'd just throw the cat away.
The veterinarian thought they were joking and ignored the person. However, after the owner left, they truly abandoned the cat.
The little cat brought to the hospital was lethargic, curled up in a ball and lying still in the litter box. After being given fluids for an entire night, there was still no improvement in its condition, and it even started passing blood.
The doctor said that as long as the little one could survive the next three days and its white blood cell count returned to normal, it would likely be fine. Everyone was rooting for the little one, with countless kind-hearted people waiting to adopt it once it was discharged.
Perhaps the cat heard the well-wishes of the kind people and didn’t want to disappoint them. Its condition began to improve slowly, and it became more spirited each day. No longer hiding in the litter box, it even started to interact with the young lady.
Finally, after spending a week at the hospital, the little cat was discharged, fully healed. Since so many people wanted to adopt it, the young lady decided to wait until it fully recovered, get it spayed, and then find a suitable new owner.
After all, it had been abandoned once before, and she didn’t want the little one to go through another round of suffering. She wished this lucky little cat would find a reliable owner and live the rest of its life happily.
The Silver British Shorthair in the Grass
Another young lady, while browsing the community chat, saw a photo of a silver British Shorthair, along with its carrier, abandoned alone in the neighborhood's greenbelt.
She went downstairs to check, only to find that the carrier was empty. She thought the cat had been taken by a kind person, but then she found the motionless cat in a nearby grass pile.
The little one looked listless and unresponsive, clearly very sick. The person who opened the carrier probably didn’t take it because of this condition.
The carrier also contained a vaccination record, with the last vaccination date in 2021. The owner's contact information was scratched out, which meant the owner had kept the cat for nearly three years. What could have happened for them to abandon a pet that had been with them for so long?
The little one was very beautiful, but its lost and helpless expression broke the young lady’s heart. It seemed like it knew it had been abandoned...
The young lady took the little one to the vet and discovered that it had urinary blockage, which wasn’t a fatal condition but could be treated if taken to the vet promptly.
The vet examined the cat's body and found no signs of prior treatment, indicating that when the owner discovered the cat was sick, they didn’t even take it to the vet and simply abandoned it.
The owner had abandoned it, but the young lady knew the cat was still salvageable. She didn’t want to give up on this adorable little one, and the vet hospital, understanding the situation, waived part of the fees.
For the first few days, the cat wouldn’t eat or drink. Looking at the humans around it, its eyes were filled with melancholy and sadness. It probably didn’t understand why it was surrounded by strangers, and it might have been missing its owner.
Fortunately, after a few days of treatment, the little one started eating normally, but it remained distant from everyone, making it hard to approach.
The little one was very well-behaved and cooperated every time the catheter was inserted. Its condition improved day by day, and after a week of treatment, its urinary function was finally restored to normal!
Unknowingly, its attitude toward humans slowly began to change. From initially not wanting to get close to people, it now stayed in the young lady's arms, unwilling to leave.
Each time the young lady came to visit, the little one would eagerly run over and greet her, its eyes transforming from dull and lifeless to bright and lively.
Watching it move on from the pain of losing its owner and slowly face life with positivity, becoming better and better, the young lady was truly happy.
When it came time to find a new owner for the cat, the young lady was faced with a dilemma because she already had a cat and a paralyzed dog at home, and didn’t have the energy to adopt another cat.
Considering the possibility of a relapse of the urinary blockage, and to prevent the next owner from abandoning the cat again due to its illness, she had to find a good owner who was willing to spend money on treating the cat’s health issues.
Hard work pays off, and after some time of searching, she finally found the right owner for the little one. The new owner was her neighbor in the same building, and the young lady could visit the cat whenever she had free time.
That cat, abandoned due to illness and staying in the grass, finally found someone who loved it!
Adopting a cat is never a trivial matter; it’s a lifelong commitment. If you can’t take responsibility for a cat’s life, don’t take it into your home.
