In the summer of 2013, Mares was battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia when she came across a cute little puppy who she adopted and named Semper Fidelis, or Semper for short. The pup became Mares' loyal companion, always by her side, even as she underwent chemotherapy. However, a turn of events separated Mares from her beloved Semper. In 2016, she had to go to California from Florida for further medical treatment, and her roommate agreed to care for Semper. Unfortunately, Mares received a shocking call from her ex-roommate, who informed her that Semper had gone missing.
